Dear Lucky Lucy Supporter
This weekend a frantic nightmare unfolded…
Friday evening 7 dogs were marched to their death to be hanged by their necks. This alone makes one angry and pointing fingers are so easy. Their owner had died, leaving the hungry and sick furkids with his son who had absolutely no means to take care of them and wanted to end their suffering. If you have ever worked doing outreaches you will have a better understanding of what circumstances in the communities are like… they have no means to re-homing facilities, to shelters, to vets and education on the well-being of our fellow furkids are not good or not present to all. We absolutely do not condone the killing of any furkid… so let’s ‘up’ our presence in the communities, let’s educate and enable us to make a difference in their lives. Remember for that we need YOUR support.
So let’s start at the moment that this nightmare became a dream and when help arrived. Richard, an employee of volunteer Charlotte, who himself helps out at our shelter many Sundays, saw what was happening. A plan of action sprung to life and on Saturday 30 April, not 7 but 8 furkids found themselves in a van at our clinic. One by one they were examined and entered not only our facilities but also our hearts. Sometimes, the love for our new kids are instantaneous. This is the sweetest bunch that we have ever met. Even while filled with worms and bodies covered in mange, the love they have for each other and humans are extraordinary.
So, let’s get back to furkid number 8. He was clearly not part of this pack. He just happened to be there and was also loaded into the van. Why? Everything happens for a reason and this poor fellow was not doing too well. He was so scared and his body covered in various oozing infected old bite wounds. Even his manly bits were torn. When he was given his deworming he snuggled his head in the crook of my arm as if to say “Please make this stop. Please make me feel safe. All I need is love. I will be a good boy! I promise.” We named this beautiful boy Herbie. Herbie was taken to the emergency vet and was admitted to hospital where they are caring for his infected wounds. He also has a fractured elbow with a piece of tooth stuck in it! This need surgery.
Over the next few days we will introduce the other 7 to you. We will share their sadness and joy with you.
It costs a lot of money to take in a dog. There are Parvo test, Distemper test, Vaccinations, deworming, microchipping and then specialized care depending on their needs (like mange). Plenty of good food and then sterilization when the furkid is strong enough. On top of that some need hospitalization and surgery. (We even need to make some ‘maternity’ arrangements… but more about that in the next few days…)
In 5 days we have taken in 16 furkids! (These 8, a Pitbull, Strawberry Ice and 6 pups.) This number does not even include the new outreach furkids we helped during this period. This puts an enormous load on our people and on our quarantine area. Please note that we are OVERFLOWING and that quarantine sadly has no more space left. This means that we are unfortunately unable to take in any furkids at the moment, as all new ones have to complete their 14 day quarantine (and in this case even longer, as it will be a while before they are healthy again and able to move into our camps when they are ready for adoption.)
Having said that, we humbly ask for your assistance in caring for our new family members.
