3 March 2015 – Fire near the LLF premises.

Thank You, Thank You!!! Our furkids are safe from the fire!

We got calls about a fire at the Rondeberg area that was threatening our precious ones this afternoon. Earlier this evening, the wind had turned and with it the immediate danger subsided. The bad smoke was blown away and our furkids were safe!

Thanks to the neighbours, firefighters and police. Thank you to the handful of people who came to assist, Ampie, Patrys, Adele & Salomie. Thank you to Belinda and Rosario for your help. A huge thank you to Johan who kept us all calm and for the shared knowledge and advice, your assistance is hugely appreciated. Another thank you to Sarie who helped to show us around the neighbouring places and pointed out where help would be needed.

And a big THANK YOU to our staff, under the leadership of Anyway and Bonile, who looked after our furkids and who helped to bring neighbouring furkids to safety. These furkids will overnight with us and be returned tomorrow when it is safe.

While visiting the surrounding areas (some of us still in high heels), it became very clear: We have a huge need right on our doorstep. Urgent interventions are needed to provide those furkids with medical care and food. We will start our outreaches THIS week! Not sure how, but we just need to believe that there will be enough financial suppawt for us to make a difference in these furkids’ lives. We already have our first patient, puppy Oortjies, on the farm for treatment!
So tonight we are tired, but just so THANKFUL! Our thoughts are with our neighbours who were directly impacted by the fire.

Hope there are no serious flare ups tomorrow!

P.S. Apologies if we forgot to add your name, it’s been a very stressful experience for us and the furkids…. And an eye opener about the HUGE need in our own area!

Thank you Johan for your kind words and thank you for being a shoulder to lean on and always willing to lend a helping paw!

We salute YOU!

The Swartland is at peace – some nice cool weather around 26-28 degrees and no smoke anywhere in side… I’m so impressed with the LLF team who are so committed – I was there for a few minutes talking to Anyway at the gate – the next moment I had like 6 cars behind me all rushing in – the LLF volunteers arrived like a SWOT team called in for a battle … I still smell the tyres and valves on the army vehicles. A quick check that LLF is fine then they all poured out to go help the community. This is why LLF is so close to my heart !!

Please share this newsletter with friends, family and colleagues and remember to visit our website to see all the cats and dogs waiting for their forever home.

The past few days have been hectic in Cape Town with all the devastating fires. On Tuesday afternoon some of our board members and volunteers rushed to the farm to help the workers when a fire at Rondeberg got very close to our farm. Just when we thought it was under control we got a call to help The Kitten Cottage nearby who had to evacuate their cats for the evening. The story follows below.

Please see the 3 microchip events planned for the next two weeks and encourage everybody you know in those areas to get their pets chipped.

We have been lucky with quite a few cats and dogs who found homes. Please encourage your friends and family to rather adopt than buy. The more animals we home, the more we can help.

We still have a lot of work to complete the dog camps and aim to have it done before winter. If there are any handy men or woman who would like to help or even sponsor a camp please mail volunteer@luckylucy.org

We urgently need lots and lots of paving if anybody has contacts with paving companies.
